Ideal Candidate
The ideal Controller is a detail-oriented, highly reliable accounting professional with strong nonprofit accounting expertise and sound judgment. You are comfortable owning day-to-day accounting operations and partnering closely with the Chief Financial Officer in a fast-moving, fully remote environment. You take pride in producing accurate, timely financial information and maintaining clean systems and processes. You work independently, manage competing priorities with ease, and know when to flag risks, ask questions, or suggest improvements. You are comfortable making progress without perfect information and value efficiency alongside rigor.

Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting
- Prepare month end financial reporting package - income statement, balance sheet, budget comparisons, KPIs, etc
- Track restricted funds including releases from restriction
- Prepare month end reconciliations of balance sheet accounts and prepare other schedules necessary for monthly financial close process
- Review departmental actual vs budget reports for reasonableness prior to finalizing and make adjustments as needed.
- Assist CFO with the quarterly financial reporting package for the board of directors
- Prepare financial analysis on an as needed basis
- Assist CFO with the annual budget development process and year end financial projections
General Ledger
- Maintain the general ledger account & department codes in all accounting applications
- Review monthly general ledger details, research transactions and resolve mis-codings as needed
- Prepare journal entries to support accurate accrual-based accounting, including monthly payroll allocations
Accounting Operations
- Maintain the accounts payable subledger (Bill.com), including grants and operating expense invoice processing & payments
- Oversee coding, approval, and syncing of travel, expense, and reimbursement transactions (Divvy / Bill Spend & Expense) to the general ledger
- Prepare & send A/R invoices (low volume)
- Problem solve with vendors & customers as needed
- Process employee invoices for erroneous use of company credit cards
- Assist with updating and publishing accounting policies as needed
- Calculate quarterly excise taxes and support timely payments
Cash Management & Other
- Assist CFO with preparations of weekly cash needs
- Request bank transfers from investment accounts to support short-term cash needs
- Support external auditors during the annual audit, including preparation of requested schedules
- Assist external accountants with preparation of financial schedules for the annual Form 990-PF.
- Fulfill Q&A as needed regarding GL coding, invoice processing and similar topics
- Prepare for and attend weekly meetings with CFO
Desired Knowledge, Skills, Experience, and Personal Attributes
- 5+ years of direct accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, economics, or a related business field
- Solid understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles
- Experience in preparing and analyzing financial statements
- Proficiency with spreadsheet tools such as Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and follow-through
- Ability to manage work independently, take initiative, and thrive in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Comfort with giving and receiving feedback for continuous improvement
- Demonstrated integrity, humility, emotional intelligence, and commitment to transparency
- Experience with agile or iterative ways of working is a plus
